BFL Materials
Barrier Free Living was instrumental in starting the New York City Coalition on Housing for People with Disabilities as well as a task force on homeless people with disabilities. The coalitions were instrumental in changing city building codes and creating access in the city’s homeless services system.
Over two decades of working with people with disabilities, BFL consumers and staff have rallied for accessible transportation. Under the leadership of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority made all of their buses accessible. Work still continues on creating more accessibility in the subway system. The newest struggle for the disabled community is access to ferries for interborough travel and accessible taxis.'
